Don't skimp on ski lessons - they will provide you with the bedrock for years of enjoyable skiing in future!

I would also recommend Where to Ski and Snowboard as an excellent and comprehensive resource, particularly when it comes to vslue for money and the respective resort costs.

I've found it to be honest and inclusive in its appraisals and unlike a previous poster find it gives credit to many different types of resorts!

I think the most importan on your first ski holiday is to get information about the facilities you can use and the options you have. Of course, you should book a ski-trainer if you dont know how to ski.

Andorra doesn't sound like a bad shout because reasonable skiing, not expensive and mostly native English speaking instructors. Have lessons while you are there. Go for a chalet or hotel (ie not self catered) if you are a beginner because you won't want to be buying food and cooking at the end of the day.
