Swiss ball & foam mat and 2kg weights all down from the attic - and will search out Craig.

FWIW I DON"T use machines in my gym - a friend of mine has a similar theory as Skiaskidoo and told me machines are in gyms because the masses want to see them in there and judge a gym on their presence - but you don't really need them. My last programme from her was all about HIT. I just wanted something a little more Ski oriented to get me back on the slopes.

Thanks everyone..

Congrats on your ambition. That's the most important step. I had a knee replaced in July of '09, and got back on skis in January. Lots of stationary biking for stamina and rebuilding atrophied muscle, and physical therapy for mobility made it possible. Dr ok'd it with some cautions and limits. Best-o-luck with your recovery.

The personal trainer at my gym said pretty much the same, and suggested I use loose weights and improve ,y cardio vascular fitness alongside trying to strengthen core, legs and upper body. I don't touch fixed weights and echo the sentiment that these are easy options for the masses who think going to the gym is a social event where it's important to look good whilst pretending to get fit.

I'd suggest the original poster concentrates on what's been suggested, ie balance and strengthening of the quads in particular. I tend to use a powerbag 15kg (start with 10kg) amd have just ramped up to 70 squats each session, interspersed with cardio work.
I do 30, rest 1 min, 20 and rest, and 20 fast to finish. These will really help with the quads which I've always found are the only muscles I've ever felt tire when skiing.
