I had read that women skiing in those countries recently were enjoying a faily relaxed lifestyle with less dress and association restrictions, but that their religeous leaders were not so happy. If I can find the article, I'll link to it.

Prior to recent years' conflict Afganistan was one of the more progressive countries. In many of these countries religeous fundamentalism has been a relatively recent phenomenon. You never really heard the term until the revolution in Iran.
