It's good to have some options that allow you to layer or not as needed. So much depends on your outer jacket and pants, as these can vary from lightweight shells to very heavily insulated.

I like to choose between a light/mid weight base layer of wool blend, silk, or some technical polyester; and heavier weight micro fleece type material. These can be combined for a third level of insulation.

If my ski pants are not insulated, I wear a pair of regular weight polyester fleece pants as well as the base layers. I like to wear a shell jacket with either a quilted or soft shell jacket underneath. This gives me the most options to tailor the layers to what is needed.

The most important part of dressing for skiing is to have good ventilation available. This allows you to dress for the morning, but be comfortable in the afternoon.

Sorry that got a little OT. Check out Sierra trading post.
because I'm so inclined .....

Helly Hanson are the dogs dangly's but i have recently purchased some Aldi cycling baselayers which are only £9.99. They do tops and bottoms but I have just got tops. They work well when i cycle and wick the sweat away from the body well. Give em a try you can't go wrong for a tenner....

but isnt it with aldi that you have to be there at the right time as they are not always in stock?

EDIT: These are on sale at the minute. They might suit me

Question on base layers, might seem a daft one.

If I have a simple wicking base layer (not the sexy thermal one above), can i then wear a normal cotton t-shirt on top of that? Or does it defeat the object?

No problem with that. I just tend to wear my Helly topthen a semi decent fleece and then my jacket. You could go for a string vest type number such as what Rab C Nesbit wears. Believe it or not they are very good ( although outdated now with these new fangled wicking materials) as they provide a layer of air between the skin and the next clothing item. Could also be used as a fancy dress item if you are really hard.

Loving your countdown timer by the way. I need one of them....

The idea is for all the layers you wear to pass moisture out to the shell, where hopefully it will be allowed to pass through the shell material. The point is that no layer should be wet, or hold significant moisture, as this allows heat to pass easily.

Just that I have seen a karrimoor base layer on Sports Direct site for £6 (reduced from £20), wondering that it would be a bit chilly with just that flimsy thing on.

I cant take the glory for the timer, FarQ on here did it  :D
