We are driving from Milton Keynes to St Francoise Longchamp in Feburary and can't decide between buying a roof rack or using magnetic ski rack for our two pairs of skis. The magnetic holders seem a good idea as they can tranfer from car to car but I've not heard from anyone who has used them. Has anyone?

I have used both when I first started driving to the alps I used the Magnetic ski rack and they are very very good, in fact I still have it, the only reason I do not use it any more is I have now brought a roof box where can store a lot more gear. If you plan to drive every year then I would think about the ski box, click on the link below as I brought the box from these guys and they delivered a good price and customer service. Hope that helps. :lol:

If you are using magnetic ski racks make sure the roof and the magnets do not have even the tiniest bit of dirt, grit, sometimes even ice as when you take it off it will scratch the hell out of your paintwork

The comment made by Hirsty is very valid.

There is another point that no one mentionned that is worth considering.

Many modern cars have rear folding seat option with a "tunnel" to rear of car, which I understand is called the boot or truck in all other countries!

It is not recommended to drive with skis on roof for two reasons;
1. dirt, salt etc,,ruins ski bases and ski bindings

of course you will all mention ski bags!

That is my second point. Unless you have the very very good ski bags that have ski teams use which have a rubber liner and padding,,you will NOT protect your skis. Rust will set in, salt or chemical producst will damage skis.

Also unless you watch your skis at all times,,chances are they will "disappear" from roof!

The best option are Thules or such ski boxes or keep skis inside car!

PS. If you insist on using a ski roof bar,,make sure you know how to place skis correctly! Yes of course tips towards rear of car!

Thanks for the advice - I think I will give magnetic ones a go.
