Yeah, following an instructor is always a lot easier.
Walking home from the pub last night I had to concentrate on walking....
Carving

The steeper the slope, the harder it is to carve turns and still control speed. Head to easy slopes to work on carving.
Finishing the turn is the key to keeping your speed under control.
I was always worried about carving blacks as I had the same issue but not so worried now after the lessons I had a few weeks ago. Was concentrating so hard on following instructor that didn't even realise we were on a black run until noticed the colour of the markers as we were carving on and back onto the piste.

I try to carve my turns but end up skidding a lot (and tiring myself out quicker). How do I eliminate the skids and carve properly?
I'm at the stage where I can get down blacks in pretty much full control but I'm doing it slower than everybody else because I'm skidding while they carve.

You must be skiing with god because even world cup skiers can not link pure carved turns on a black run
I would consider myself an experienced and competent skier and once doing more than 2 carved turns on a red I'm absolutely flying and need to skid to stop myself dying!!!!

Memo to self: stop skiing with god and start skiing with ordinary mortals for a change...
Truth be told, I'm skidding on everything above blue. I just do more of it on blacks.
