With less than four months until Val Thorens opens on 18 November, we look at what's new in the highest ski resort in Europe for this season.

LAC DU LOU MOUNTAIN REFUGE

If you love escaping into nature, then the Vallon du Lou offers a wild mountain break between Val Thorens and Les Menuires. You can access the refuge by skiing off-piste or by snowshoes. The local region has invested €1.2 million in this project to provide hikers and skiers with a new peaceful refuge above Lac du Lou. This classic mountain chalet can sleep 31 and boasts a large dining room as well as an on-site guardian. You can a meal at this magical site or even stay for a night under the stars.

A NEW GONDOLA REPLACES THE MORAINE CHAIR

The Moraine chair lift has been replaced with a gondola at a cost of €14 million. The 10-seater cabins will work well for beginners, who can now relax in the warmth and comfort of the new gondolas.

A BLUE RUN IN THE SUNSHINE

A fourth blue run has been added in the Plein Sud sector. This busy area is especially used at the end of the day by skiers returning from other resorts in Les 3 Vallées.

THE SPORTS CENTRE'S NEW DÉLIR'PARK

The Delir'Park covers more than 630m² and has four areas aimed at acrobatic fans and energetic kids. The Crazy Challenge is a 'Wipe Out' style module for groups of friends (5 maximum) to battle it out. There's a Ninja Contest, where young Ninjas can tackle an obstacle course against the clock. The Trampolining area is ideal for practising back and front flips, superman jumps, spinning jumps, 360° spins - all landing safely in an enormous foam pit. There's an 'Iron Cross' area that combines running, weightlifting and climbing elements, combining cardiovascular, endurance, strength, flexibility, power, speed and agility. In short, a complete fitness programme!
