Hello,
I have lower back pain mostly from sitting at a computer for long hours. I am working on improving my posture and flexibility and my pain is reducing though not completely gone. It is is uncomfortable while skiing though and takes some of the fun out of it. Is there any kind of back support that I can use to help this situation?

Hi Sal,
This is an unusual causal situation for a ski condition.

Rather than looking at self help with a support, I suggest a different solution.

You may well respond positively to physiotherapy. My reasoning for this is that if you believe the cause may be from sitting at a computer for long hours, then you will need to mobilise and flex the back muscles.

However, if you do choose this course of action, I suggest that you do some homework in terms of finding a sports physio. Start at your local sports centres, sports club. Personal recommendation counts.

Good luck.

Dave Mac is spot-on. Physio and stretching sorted my office-related lower back pain.

Also, working standing up helps me sometimes - I have a desk that goes up and down

Whack a Tens machine on for half and hour after a days skiing helps me and I have serious back problems.

Not forgetting some good back exercises and or physio/chiropractor

I have a fail proof solution for any aches and pains. Two stiff shots of schnapps and a handful of anti inflammatories. Works every time

I do similar work and had exactly the same symptoms. Then I underwent a fairly full physical for a new job and the cause was identified. It was a very specific condition that no one had identified before because it wasn't life-threatening. They sent me to a sports clinic, and they came up with a very simple solution plus certain exercises that I now do, and the problem is gone. So before anything else, I'd suggest you see a doctor and budget for a session at a sports clinic.

Salilsurendran, If the pain is greater when you are skiing than when doing other activities, you might consider seeing a boot fitter. It may be that your set up - boots, and bindings is not putting you into a good position. A good boot fitter may actually deviate from a set up that puts you into the best skiing position, to one that accommodates the limitations of your back.
because I'm so inclined .....
