Hi All,
We are planning a Ski trip (2 Adults + 2 kids, 5 & 7 year) to French Alps during X-mass(24th to 31st December). Our budget is around 1000-1200 Pounds for self-catered 1 bed apartment + whatever it cost for ski pass, ski hire , ski school & ski transfer etc. We have already booked flights to Geneva.
Wife & kids are beginners & I am intermediate. Idea is to go anywhere within 2 hours from Geneva airport which is good for beginner but high enough to have snow during x-mass. Also not fancy too many bars or night life (for obvious reasons). So it is typical 6-7 days of ski & some local food.
Could someone suggest name of resort which fits our requirements? I have done some research & came up with following resorts.

Chamnonix Vally
Villars-sur-Ollon
L'Alpe-d'Huez
Valmeinier
Les Coches
Plagne
Valmorel
Val Thorens
Alpe d'huez,
Montgenevre
Flaine

What does experts says about them? Any suggestion to book an apartment would be very helpful.

Thanks & Regards

The higher the better at that time of the year, or somewhere low where you can access skiing at altitude.

You need nursery slopes that are close by to your accommodation. Chamonix is not a beginners resort. I can recommend Montgenevre as the nursery slopes come straight into the village which is at a decent altitude.

Add Avoriaz to your list. Not a pretty place but snow sure and plenty of self catering available.
Excellent for the newbies and plenty of skiing close by for yourself.
You don't want a resort where you can't get back to the nursery slopes easily to meet up.
Montgenevre is a long drive from Geneva - Turin much closer.
Flaine could be good.
The resorts further south (Alpes D'Huez, Les Deux Alpes) are too far. Driving times are extended in winter due to the weather and then the number of cars/buses on the road.
The Tarentaise resorts are on the limit for your 2 hours. Valmorel is the closest, followed by Val Thorens, La Plagne and Les Arcs. Valmorel could work for you - a nice compact and fairly small place.

As you are beginners, we do not need to pay the premium for the big resorts, though going that early, you would be safer with a high resort. I would forget about the likes of Chamonix or the Trois Vallee. Flaine would be a good bet but an even better option might be Courmayour. It is actually in Italy but relatively easily accessed from Geneva via the Mount Blanc tunnel. It has nice beginner skiing and is a lovely traditional Italian village with lots of excellent pizzerias, etc, that will keep the kids happy.

I would concur about Courmayeur.
I might get shot down for this but I'm not convinced La Plagne is that suitable for beginners. There are seemingly a lot of blues into resort but they are not in the "easy blue" category and probably would be reds in the linked resort of Les Arcs.

Apartments in French ski resorts take being small to the extreme.

Chamonix itself is very firmly out of the question, but in the valley, St Gervais, Les Contamines, and Megeve are good resorts IF there's enough snow - they're relatively low so snow can be a problem. As others have said Flaine is a good choice, but so too would be either Valmeinier or Valmorel - the latter is much bigger. I'm afraid I have to disagree with the last 2 posters, I think Courmayeur is totally unsuitable for beginners - the novice slopes are poor and split up, and there's virtually nothing to progress to except fairly tough blues and reds. My vote would be for l'Alpe d'Huez, but truthfully I wouldn't fly to Geneva to get there - it could end up being a 4+hr drive if the weather closes in.

We took our kids 4&6 at the time to lea arcs with esprit ski. Whilst they were fantastic with the kids you do pay a premium although once added up it probably worked out the same. We payed around £3500 fully catered chalet with all the kids lessons , skis and passes included. Worth looking at. Whilst for beginners it is a vast area you still have something for everyone. The other cheap option is to stay in bough and get the funnicular up to resort every day.
