Instructors without helmets

What is that about

In resort ski schools, snow domes, dry slopes et al insist on children wearing helmets yet most o the time the instructors don't wear a helmet themselves

Is it only me that thinks this sends out the wrong message to kids - we don't need to wear a helmet when we are older cause our instructor doesn't

We all wear a helmet not only because I feel safer and the camera won't stick to my head LOL but also to send the message to our daughter that it is the norm

I'm sure someone will have some thoughts on this

Wearing of helmets (or not) by adults is a matter for themselves. Personally, I believe it is the sensible thing to do and would strongly advocate it to others. I was converted after suffering a mild concussion in the most innocuous of falls :oops:.

While respecting the right of adults to make their own choices, my own impression is that those not wearing helmets are increasingly the exception - helmet wearing is now the norm and the kids will accept this as being as normal was wearing a seatbelt. The younger generation have grown up with childseats, seat belts etc. Not like the old days when you could have half a dozen kids rolling around the back seat with no restraint :roll:.

If you are unhappy with instructors not wearing them, then insist on an instructor that is prepared to wear one. You could also consider contacting the ski school and asking them to insist on it with their staff :wink: .

I think people have moved on from the old adversarial freedom debate. Freedom of choice is now accepted. I do accept that I have been saved from a minimum of a serious head injury, having had concussion, even with a helmet.

That was after 40+ years of wearing a woolly hat.

The current generation of young skiers, in being made to wear helmets, will not change.

I agree about instructors not wearing helmets. Having said that, in my own resort, this tends to be a late season issue, when the weather is warm, and also mainly in beginner, lower intermediate classes. That is no excuse, though.

Firstly, I always campaigned strongly against the pressure to wear a helmet for many years, and now I wear a helmet all the time, this started 2 years ago after watching The Crash Reel. I had a first helmet I didn't like or get on with, so swapped it for a new one in Austria last March and I love it, its part of my normal kit now. I do not dis anyone who chooses not to wear one, its entirely up to them, and I think its wrong to tell someone its wrong not to wear one, although thats the way I was treated for a long time, particularly by certain people on this forum!!!

Re Instructors - I mentioned this a while back on here, I also think its odd that people who are teaching skiing should choose not to wear one. Whilst Dave is right about some of them not wanting to wear them late season, I still think this is wrong and all instructors should have to wear one, purely and simply because this sends out the wrong message from those who people look up to and often are the first skiers they ever experience.

I do believe in every resort I have been to in the past3-4 years the VAST majority of skiers now wears helmets. I saw literally 4 people in Solden this March not wearing helmets. I think its become the norm.

Whether a ski instructor wears his helmet or not is the last thing i as a pupil am even thinking about. The fact they arent wont make me not want to wear one. Its their choice what they stick on their heads. By the way been to niederau three times now and its still as lovely and great as it was the first time ☺ cannot wait for my return trips next yr.

This year all in our ski group were wearing a helmet except the instructor on day 1. Day 2, instructor rocks up with helmet on. Nobody had said a word.

He/She must have got scared!
