I'm thinking of buying a second had pair of twin tips to have a bit of a play around on for a upcoming trip in three weeks time.
I've no idea what to look out for in a pair though, what size etc. I'm only 5'8" and about 74kgs so I assume a small enough pair?
I do not really want to buy a new set as I've no idea if I will use them often or not.
For anyone who skis twin tips, what are they like on piste?
Does anyone have a pair they don't want anymore or if not where should I look to buy a relatively cheap pair?
Thanks.
When in doubt?....Flat out.

Why would you need a 2nd pair of twin tips? Unless you are big into park skiing and landing or taking off backwards is there any point to them?

For on-piste skiing they are essentially going to be rubbish, too soft as designed for park, flappy at both ends. On the upside might have some fun graphics but can't think of any other +ve.

I suppose that I'm wondering if they would be better for playing around on. I'm starting to try more jumps and trying 180 jumps etc.

Next you will find yourself sitting next to a group of borders waiting for a jump or watching others for 1/2 the day. Try and get some time in on a trampoline before you head out and go light on the din setting until you have nailed it.

Gareth - just go hire some; you can get a current model that's been recently serviced and ask the guys in the shops what would suit you. You can have a day or two noodling around with no commitment beyond the hire cost then.

You might find them fun for a day of something different, or maybe a bit limiting as Ranchero says... but I'm sure you'll enjoy finding out. 8)

I bought a set of volkl all mountain twin tips two years ago and have never looked back. I was a bit concerned as to how they would perform on groomers but they are fantastic. I find that the extra width also adds to the stability on softer snow as well as moguls etc.

Just to add to above. If they are a second ski or you are mainly spending time in park then go for it.

If they are your main ski and you are trying to improve your skiing then they will be huge compromise onpiste; just like any specialist ski.

In my opinion All Mountain is marketing speak for compromise. 80 % of my skiing is done on a Head Magnum (piste ski). Nearly all of what I would call in bounds offpiste (I can see a lift) being done on them. Simply unless you have >15 cm of powder a piste ski is easier and more fun to ski on. Better edge grip, faster in moguls, bring your feet together and work in powder, ski hard and you go through anything. No all mountain, ski twin tip or not will give me that. Fat skis only come out for biggest of days and light skis for touring.

If the park is where your time is being spent go for it. For odd jump here or there think about the good stuff you are missing out on.
