Aldi’s Annual Ski Kit Sale This Week

J2SkiNews posted Dec-2015

There are £999.00 ski jackets and then there are £19.99 Aldi ski jackets, is the price difference justified?

Aldi haven't yet covered that one in their TV advertising campaign, but they believe the skiwear they sell during special weeks each winter does make the quality grade for its customers to be warm and dry on the ski slopes.

This year the company's ski kit – which features a basic and pro range and covers gear for men, women and children - is scheduled to go on sale at their stores nationwide this Thursday, 3rd December, with the usual "When it's gone, it's gone" tag line – in other words stocks are limited and when sold out, won't be replaced.

Skiers can be completely kitted out for £59.94, a deal which includes Adult's Ski Trousers (£16.99) and Jackets (£19.99), Ski and Sports Base Layers (£8.99), Ski tops (£4.99) and Ski Socks (£3.99) and Technical Ski Gloves (£4.99).

For the more demanding skier there's the Aldi Pro range, which features an improved specification, including a 10,000mm waterproof rating, a fully breathable membrane in excess of 10,000 gr/m2/24h and a 100% windproof (wind resistance zero L/m2/sec). In short the company says,
"…to rival big-brand names but without the big-brand price tag."

The Pro range covers everything from a Pro Jacket (£34.99) and Salopettes (£29.99) to a Pro Padded Jacket (£19.99) and a Winter Sports Compression Base Layer (£8.99).

Along with all the kids and adult ski clothing this winter Aldi is also taking on action camcorders by launching its own Action Camcorder (£29.99) on the same date. It features a 135° wide-angle lens, 720p resolution and records at 30 frames per second.

Thanks for the heads up. We have a couple of requirements for the coming season.

Aldi and Lidl are a first point of call for us ski and sports gear.

One of our requirements is a ski helmet for Frau Mac. (I don't know how you can wear out a ski helmet when you don't fall, but she must be obeyed...) For helmet buyers, ensure that the helmet is marked with the European standard EN 1077.

If I see the right ski jacket, then I might be tempted. For me, a key requirement ,(after the alpine spec), are the pockets. Four outer pockets, plus a left sleeve ski pass pocket, and two large inner pockets. One of these has to fit a 10" x 7" water colour pad, so must be 8" wide.
That's the main reason my ski jackets get so old before replacement. (plus the fact that I would rather spend the money on lift passes...)

Also needing ski gloves, but that is one item I have not seen in the Lidl/Aldi camps that meet the needs.

Yeah, so it came to pass. Frau Mac slipped out and bought another helmet, good to EN1077, all white, as she does. Since I mostly ski behind her, and she wears all white everything, I may be glad of the red led light on the back of the helmet? I just smile, as ever just grateful for continuing access to the slopes....
This is not just a red light, I will have you know. It comes in 3 modes, red, red flashing on off, and red flashing top, bottom.
People need to know this.
And to think I started skiing in cable bindings, little did I know what the future held.

I later tried the jackets, none good for a pocket for watercolour pad, but not too bad for general skiing. Came back with a pair of leather palmed gloves.

Four years ago I explained the difference between the standards.

Ski Helmet EN1077, Class A or B.

Cycling Helmet EN1078, considered by the BHRF to be inadequate.

You paid more than a wee bit over the odds for that helmet. They cost less than 15 quid in a German Aldi, it looks like Aldi are ripping off their UK customers just as badly as the major supermarkets do!

All ski helmets sold in the EU have to meet EN 1077, unfortunately it's not a very demanding standard. The impact test requires that a deceleration of no more than 250g is transmitted to the head in an impact at 5.42m/s (a little over 12 mph). Concussion occurs at around 80 to 120g and serious injury or death can occur at 200g, as the risk of a severe brain injury increases with age. I wouldn't select a helmet just on its ability to meet EN 1077.

You could probably make a helmet that performed better than some of the helmets currently on sale out of cardboard!

Paid over the odds? How is £20 for a ski helmet over the odds? Just because you can get one in Germany for £15 hardly means you've been ripped off, does it?

Good point about standards not being v exacting - but what other criteria do you use? You could wear a climbing helmet, I suppose.

You are probably right about cardboard - but then again, cardboard is v strong if used correctly

I would be suspicious of a helmet that cost 15-20 pounds. Unless you want to wear a helmet for the sake of wearing one and not for what it does, go for some known reputable brands. It's not a fashion statement or any statement at all, it's a protection... I need a new helmet this season - in 6 or 7 years that I started wearing one I took three big tumbles where helmet did a very good job as I walked away from all three laughing (well, one ended up in a whip lash, but could have been a concussion), so probably time for it to retire. Not looking forward to spending $$, but it has to be done.
