Snow reliability in Ski Welt region.

Don87 posted Oct-2015

Hi,

I am thinking of heading to Ellmau in the Ski Welt region of Austria for the last week of January 2016 and first week of February 2016. I know its slap bang in the middle of winter, but the low altitude worries me.

Have there been seasons where snow cover has been an issue that time of year or am I just being overly paranoid?

Cheers

There probably have, but they'd be very unusual.

Have a look at the Snow Depth History for Ellmau.

The last 3 seasons there's not been less than half a metre on the lower slopes by the end of February and SkiWelt have more snow cannons than just about anywhere else so even if it's not falling from the sky there should be plenty. 8)

For a first-hand view though... cueing Dave Mac in 1, 2, 3...

Snowmaking and maintenance in the Skiwelt is probably the best anywhere. You should have absolutely no problems at end of January.

Wanderer has it right. The Skiwelt is only 12 minutes away from Niederau, so I ski Ellmau every January.

Hopfgarten is always the weakest, but Ellmau, Going, Scheffau and Söll are all north facing. Unless it is a 1 in 40 year event, all should be OK.

Been to Soll 4 times in January in the last 6 years. Never been a problem with snow, even at the bottom by the nursery slopes. Even last year when they hardly any with Xmas approaching it then tipped down. Ok it's not a resort you will swamped with powder but you will be fine.
