Curious?

All my stuff is years old, I bought my skis years ago - 5 years - they were quite expensive although I bought them ex display in summer, same with boots.

And so are all the other things, gloves are the only things I replaced as I lost them.

Have to say if you are using skis >5yrs old you are really missing out as technology is changing all the time. Boots, gloves, jackets last until you wear them out.

Unless you are skiing a lot perhaps better just to rent.

My last pair of skis, Scott Neo, I had for 5 seasons, did about 13 weeks on them, but they were getting tatty and battered, the bindings were dangerously loose, and the tails split open, they had to go so I replaced them with my Atomic Blackeyes in October which I skied on for the first time in Jan. No idea when I will change them next but certainly not even considering it.

Last pair of gloves I bought 3 years ago, leather Surfanic ones and still unmarked and in use. However, I treated myself to some new white leather ones this winter which are actually a lot warmer and amazingly comfortable. They should last a while, maybe not pure white though!

Poles - I bought some new ones a couple of seasons ago but lost a basket last trip and can't for the life of me obtain a replacement anywhere - in resort, online, shops, ebay....nothing. I may have to get some new ones next week in Austria, as Armada baskets are quite unique and you can't put any other baskets on them. Typical.

Boots I have now had 6 years, I can't believe it is that long. They've been great, but I am at the stage where I am thinking seriously about spending on replacing them with something more up to date, you know custom shells etc as technology has moved on. I also want different coloured boots, as mine are white and red and I want something less obvious.....watch me end up with bright green or something!

As for outerwear, I seem to somehow end up with at least one new jacket or pair of pants every season. I thought my green North Face jacket was about 2 years old but looking back through photos I see I have now had it 4 seasons....outrageous! I now have 2 ski jackets which are excellent, precisely what I need so no need to change them. However this season I added a soft-shell to replace the North Face black one I had as the zip broke and was not repairable (it was from the outlet shop so no big). The new one is "wine" coloured and I really like it, especially with my new Sallopettes in Navy blue which my son brought home from America at Xmas - North Face brand new, £65, you cannot go wrong!

I don't think I have got much, apart from some socks and base layers, dating back more than 5 years though. Some people I know ski with the same old stuff year in year out and never change it. A mate of mine had his last pair of boots 17 years, must have been comfy.

My oldest possession (in ski terms) is my jacket. Its quite colourful - mainly a bright yellow but with nice blue and black trim. Very distinctive on the slopes .

I bought it in Italy nearly 20 years ago and it is still going strong. though beginning to show its age a little in recent years (a bit like myself ). It was the Italian ski team official supporters club jacket that year. I got it at end of season for half price. It was still reasonably expensive but very good quality as evidenced by its longevity . Spotted several other examples on the slopes of the Dolomites on my recent trip. So it is not just me that is making it last .

I am reluctantly coming to the conclusion that I should think about a new jacket but the thought is a bit traumatic . Also want something distinctive and modern jackets seem to be really boring in the main .

Change jacket and pants every year. Boots every 3 years and skis every year. Had poles for 10 years. Now need replacing as they've just been nicked!

Jacket and pants every year, what are you doing to them :-)?

My jacket has done 6 full seasons (16 weeks a season), new trousers only because I was told by H.I.D. that I had to be more visible. Have kept the old ones. Skis have done an estimated 5000-6000 km (Salomon Enduro XT850) – and this begs the question: How many miles are skis good for? They are pretty battered, but seem OK. I'm going to compare next week against some new Salomon X-Drives.

They fade in the sun, doesn't do to be seen in faded gear!
