Just searching for info on Samoens and found this post. We have booked for Jan 2017. Have always skied Austria (ski welt)so any useful info would be welcome. I.e transfers, eating, which lift passes etc. Mainly intermediate skiers and understand there is some fairly long runs in the wider area. Tia.

Stayed in Samoens a few years ago and enjoyed it good facilities and nice restaurants but a faf to get to the slopes ..a bus (free) to the gondola and back but the skiing is good once you are up ..there is a run all the way down under a little bubble to Vercland where you can catch a bus back..but in March it might be shut ..but for a non skier the place to go..if you have a car Les Gets is about half an hour and there is also a nice little resort called Praz de Lys which is good for a change also about half an hour

If conditions permit, you should try the Cascades run down to Sixt. You will have to catch the bus back to Samoens but it is worth a go. Also, the runs down to Morillon are really good and you should try Marvel even though it is a green run.

La Luge is a good mountain restaurant and is also a good place to stop for an afternoon drink on your way back to Samoens. In Samoens itself, Le Serac is really good and very popular so you may have to book. Hope this helps.

Thanks. We've stayed in the same Austrian village for the last 10 years so it's exciting to be going somewhere new.

Samoens is the best option. It is a beautiful, traditional resort with very old wooden buildings. In addition, the skiing is just a few minutes car/bus ride away to the gondola to take you up to a big ski area linked to several other resorts.
I hope that helps!

Not sure if the OP is still interested or following this thread, but one thing that needs to be taken into account is that Samoens can be 'very' isolated if the winds are up and the TdS is closed (as has been the case on several days on my recent trips)..

I've stayed in Samoens and Morrilon a couple of times, and Les Carroz several times. I have to say that Les Carroz gets my vote on access alone... The resort itself has awesome runs and off piste through the trees (and so quiet), and is probably the closest to Flaine as well...

I can recommend some nice accommodation as well if the OP is still interested???

The OP was from 2013 so probably not . we are going in Jan, first time skiing in France after years of skiing Austria where only once were we unable to ski because of high winds/heavy snow. Hopefully it will be ok while we are there.
