Trencher you wrote that as I wrote my reply.
Thermals must be wicking then? Sounds like an expensive thing to me (will need wicking this season in europe I think due to the heat!!)

You are meant to wear other cloths on top of your base layer. A couple of smaller layers is better then one big one. If you get too warm you can take one off. Simples

The crucial issue isn't really about comfort while you are skiing (although that's important), but what happens when things go wrong. You could be stuck on a lift for hours in -20 conditions, or go off the trail and not be found for hours. Sweaty cotton base layers might change an minor epic into a tragedy.
because I'm so inclined .....

Each to their own. If always wear them once it gets to about minus 5. I've got £2 Primark long johns that are ridiculously toastie, and I usually wear a sport base layer which takes sweat away from the body.Ian Wickham wrote:Thermals ..... never worn them, ski hard and you don't get cold
I can't wear those merino wool things close to my skin though as they itch like you know what.

I did ski in -23 a few years back and the only part of me that was cold was my boat race 8)
