Below is just to stimulate discussion as I quite often find myself 'off-piste' with no associated equipment when I take piste skis out.

Given that you were expecting to remain largely on-piste hence ski choice, what were your considerations for off-piste equipment i.e. shovel, probe, transceiver. As shown by picture on another post even areas right next to piste have slid this year. NB terrain looked like there had been some good decision making in terms of gradient. It did however appear that you were jumping off a small cornice, so wind slab must have been possible at least on some aspects.

You are correct, some avalanches have occurred very close to slopes this year. Has been a funny year so the bases in a lot of places are pretty unstable. My buddy and I decided only to ski places that we could see had track on/ pretty close to before. If it wasn't very easily accessible, we just avoided it, dropped down lower and went into more shallower terrain. I don't own any of the gear you mentioned and therefore couldn't take the risk of skiing on more treacherous slopes. IMO as great as it seems to shred fresh pow that is gnarly, I dont see it being worth risking your life for.
You are right, we pole whacked the cornice first to see how stable it was, the run off area just below it was also very shallow so any small slide would have stopped right there.
