Hi, I'm new here!

Decided to get back into skiing after 10 years off!

Me (used to ski reds) and my girlfriend (new but learning on dry ski slope) are looking for a resort for a week from 7th February this year (I understand zone A France are on half term).

Looking for a place with plenty of blues and red, but with plenty of variety (not all runs the same). Need it to be snow sure at that time of year, don't want to chance it. Not really bothered about Apres ski (though to be honest we don't really know what it's about- we're not big clubbers though). Want it to be all relatively accessible from central town, don't want to take loads of different lifts to get anywhere.

Lots of stuff we don't really know about (tree line skiing in bad weather?? South facing gets sloppy?? etc.)

At the moment our top 3 considerations are Les Arc (probably 1800), Alpes d'Huez and Courchevel (or other 3V resort) in that order. Not exclusive to France though.

Any help would be fantastic, especially if you have skied at one or more of those resorts and can comment on them.

Thanks!!

Hi, and happy Xmas!

I have been to the 3 valleys 3 times and Les Arcs/La Plagne once. I love both the places and think you have decided well.

In my opinion, if you want long cruisers then head over to La Plagne from Les Arcs (we too stayed in 1800) but if you want more of a challenge then the 3v is a great choice.

Hope this helps. All the best

Steve

I would of thought Italy would be a better bet given time of year and long break from skiing. For red and blue type skiing Cervinia is as good as life gets. Big vertical, nothing very intimidating, guaranteed snow. Add in much shorter transfer and nice village and makes a lot of sense.

Please tell me you are not going to dig out some 10yr old skis vs rent some new ones :-).

I would also look at Italy, the reds in France are often steeper than the Italian ones......don't want to scare the other half too much. Cervinia comes recommended by several if my friends and I really liked Sauze D'oulx.

Value for money it has to be Italy or Austria. As you havn't skied for 10 odd years and OH is learning try Passo Tonale which is great for one week or Sauze D'oulx.(Milky Way) which will suit you all.
Carving leaves me all on edge

Hi, We have skied lots of Italian resorts and my favourite by far is The Dolomites, a huge area including the Sellaronda.. Especially recommend Selva Gardena and Corvara, will be going 8th Feb 2015. Best not to stay in Arabba though as quite a challenge for beginners. The ski area is Dolomitisuperski. Let me know if you want more info. :)

Passo's a reasonable shout looking at the experience level, transfers a bit boring but newbies seem to really like it and it's quite reasonable on the price side.

I'd vote for Cervinia too. I went last year with my daughter who was having her 2nd week skiing. (First week in Bulgaria so could say first week!) she was happily skiing the reds there by mid week. Large ski area and you can ski to Zermatt too. Ski school was ok. We stayed at the Dragon which was lively enough. It was very early season so not much else was going on in the village. Really considered going back this year but felt the need to try something else out. Hope the Chamonix slopes are not too challenging.......
