Adelboden or Wengen 1st week 2015

Hi Looking to go to either of these 2 places & any advice welcome for early January 2015.
I've heard Wengen can get very cold in January but is somewhere I've always fancied going.
Adelboden is somewhere I don't know much about however the FIS skiers are there the week im thinking of going..

Any advice very welcome :)

Been a couple of times to Wengen. Traditional Swiss resort with lots of charm. Some old lifts, some slow trains, some new lifts so getting about speedily can be unpredictable. Prices can be very high (this is Switzerland) but nonetheless a charming place. You mention the possible cold in January-well, most ski resorts are cold in January but there would be higher and colder resorts at this time of the year. e.g. Saas Fee/Zermatt. Haven't been to Adelboden but if the FIS are training there that week then you can be assured that some runs will be blocked off for their exclusive use. Finallt if you are looking for a lively night life then Wengen is suited to the (shall we say) more mature skier. Best of luck wherever you go.

Adelboden has a nice village and the slopes are Ok but lift system is not the best in the world ....

You have two challenges early January - it is cold at high altitude so resorts like Saas-Fee and Zermatt can be pretty bleak, and often there can be a shortage of good snow, despite the cold. Wengen and Adelboden are both fabulous resorts, but the apres ski is subdued (although if you go to Adelboden during the FIS World Cup, the resort is hopping and only a couple of slopes are affected by the slalom runs - similarly Wengen for the Lauberhorn downhill). More lively throughout the season are Verbier, Flims and Davos, and they invariably have snow on account of having glaciers but also have some nice sheltered lower slopes. Andermatt is probably the best place to be sure of good snow.

I can vouchsafe the quality of Wengen as having some really good runs. As much as we laud the Lauberhorn, the mountain itself is dwarfed by the surrounding ring of mountains, including the Jungfrau and the Eiger. The Eiger north wall is terrific. Over in Murren, the dark runs on the Shilthorn need some good edges.
But for me, the Lauberhorn itself was the run that contained some of the most challenging elements.
I intend to write something about the Jungfrau area before winter, but given that you are the planning stage, give some thought as to the location of your accommodation. Try and stay in the centre. Walking into the lift/train area from the outer edges of the village is a tad slippy.
The Jungfrau area is definitely worth adding to the must do list for serious skiers, but is is an area where a bit of knowledge will make ski life easier.
