Hi Paul, welcome to J2Ski...

Some of our regulars ski in Scandinavia so can hopefully chime in (when they wake up from their summer slumbers...), but you can find the usual opening weeks for quite a few ski areas on the following pages :-

Norwegian ski area openings

Swedish ski area seasons

Obviously all dates are dependent on the arrival of the snow, but those should give you a starting point.

Hemsedal in Norway is one of the highest resorts and also one of the largest. It's highly likely to be decently cold but also likely that there will have been minimal slow coverage by late November/ early December. We've skied Hemsedal over Christmas and only half of the runs were open. personally i would go for a high resort in the alps.
slippy slidey snow......me likey!

I think Bedrock Barney is right. I was keeping an eye on lift opening in Hemsedal last year and not much was open before Christmas. I'd agree that you'd be better going to an alpine resort.

Mind you, been snowing in Hemsedal the last couple of days.....snow down to about 50-100m above the main lift

Hemsedal hopes to open mid November 2014

Hemsedal opening Friday, 28 November with very few runs open. Looks like a reasonable covering of snow, but only opening 3km of piste (effectively one long run from the top of one of the peaks)

Hemsedal opening more runs on 28 November - v good snow coverage by look of it and probably expecting quite a few local skiers.
