Looking at going to Claviere in Jan 2014, any information on the ski area and resort would be gratefully appreciated people. Should mention it will be two adults and we will be skiing.

Nice little place at the far end of the Milky Way. Some good skiing in the small sector above town, closely linked with montgenevre which you'll probably explore. Cheap being Italy.
Make sure you head up the other end and have at least a day each in sauze and sestriere, and if you get the chance take a day trip down the pass from montgenevre in serre chevalier.
Lots of quiet skiing where you're going, with some nice slopes to cruise about on, but annoyingly erratic snow fall has been a problem.
Enjoy, and come back and tell us all about it

I've been to Claviere. Went in around 2004, in early March and stayed inPassero Pelegrino.
The skiing is nice, but local area not extensive. At that time although it was right next to Montgenevre you had to buy an additional pass to ski there. Not sure if that still applies.
It was part of the Milky Way though so you could ski that area on your pass.
We were advised against skiing all the way over to Sauze as you wouldn't get long there so a few of the group got a taxi there and back which they recommended as got a whole day in Sestriere/Sauze and Sansacario.
I didn't go as had booked lassons for the week which were fun with the Italian Ski School.

We had - 15 and very heavy snow while we were there but when we arrived it wasn't so cold and the snow was very wet near the village and lifts.

Nice friendly place, skiing is ok. Not sure I'd go back because there are other places to try but no bad things to say about it either.

Most of the hotels are along either side of the street, right at the bottom of the lifts so we didn't have far to walk. Nice little town, can walk into France which is about 100 metres out of town.

I'd recommend but it's not one of those high mileage, easily accessible places if I recall and not for everyone.

I will add - my kids weren't very old at the time we went so maybe the journey to rest of Milky Way might be nothing now and easily do-able in a day with lots of skiing in between.

I would Echo Dids1. We went with another family for their first ski trip. All the kids learnt to ski here, so it was great for that. You can ski all of Claviere in a day though, no problem. Link to Montegenevre good and I would advise having the pass for this area also. Easy skiing. Bit more challenging at the back of Montgenevre if I remember correctly. Its worth a trip to Sansicario and Sauze areas but the link isn't great. Took me 1 hour and 3/4 to get there on my own with no waiting around for others. Claviere and Montgenevre are fairly high villages, so snow should be good into town. We had 2m one Xmas. I think Calviere is in the shade late on and can get cold. Sauze and Sansicario are lower and i think south facing, but you should be ok in January. I'd recommend it but I probably wouldn't return either.

Thanks everyone for the replies. It's just the two of us going and we are both fairly accomplished skiers who don't mind early starts and late finishes. It sounds like a pretty good place for a week of fun and no work!
