Hi,

would it be a bad idea to head to Kitzbühel the week before the Hahnenkamm in January? Are there areas closed off etc as they set up for the races?

I have leave booked from the 12th to the 20th of January and from the race web site from the 22nd to the 27th January has events.

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere and I've missed it.

Thanks,
Mark.

Dont think it would be a problem. The Hahnenkamm itself will probably be closed off for preparation, however there are runs either side so the hill is still open. Bit of a bummer that you cant get to ski the great run itself but other than that no issues. There are always queues getting up the hill from Kitz anyway, but I certainly didnt notice too much difference during race week.

We were there for Hahnenkamm week last year and it wasnt an issue as there is plenty of piste over the Kirchberg side or up over towards Jochberg and Pass Thurn. You can also get the Kitzbuhel Allstar Pass for about 15 euro extra that allows you to ski over into Westendorf and the rest of the Ski Welt, not to mention Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Zell am See - Kaprun and much more.

I would go for it.

That's brill thanks. We've never been to Austria before and it looks fab and it's either there or Italy. I'm attempting to book late and get two hols for the price of one. Famous last words :-)

We used to go to France every year because most of the resorts are high, snowsure and have huge skiing areas. Went to similar resorts in Italy a couple of times for similar reasons.

Been going to Austria for the last ten years and the reason is simple. Apres Ski!

You do take a little bit of a gamble with the altitude in some of the resorts, however, this is usually reflected in lower prices and if you go early enough in the season (January) it is never usually a problem.

This is the third year I have done Kitz, we have always stayed in Kirchberg (opposite side of the hill) mainly because it is cheaper. The ski area may lack technical challenges for real advanced skiers, however, if its intermediate cruising you are after look no further.

Hve never found any really jumping bars on the piste on Kirchberg side, however the London Pub in town is usually jumping by 4pm. There are no issues in that regard on the Kitz side!

Planning to end the day at least once this year in Soll. The skiing over there is excellent and the Apres Ski is meant to be world class. Will probably mean a taxi back at the end of the night, but between 4 shouldnt be too steep.

Again thanks. We are intermediate cruisers. Starting mid 40's I've been to Livigno, Arinsal twice and the Portes du Soleil, based in Chatel earlier this year, not to mention the odd break in Glenshee. My wife favours Italy whereas I have memories of watching Franz Klammer on the Hahnenkamm as a youth and want to check the place out. I'll pass on the yellow ski suit..

Booked our trip for mid January this afternoon and in the end we went for Mayrhofen. The spa/pool in the hotel we went for was the clincher for my wife. Looking forward to our first Austrian adventure...
