Hosted by Wat.tv, this is a TF1 news report with amateur video of the moment a large avalanche wrecked a chairlift carrying 70 skiers in St Francois Longchamp. No injuries, everyone rescued safely.

Observe how folks are skiing up to the slide for a closer look

It was on the 2nd.

Here is a video taken by a skier on the chairlift at the time, showing the rescue underway. Rescuer coming down the lift cable, helicopter standing by.

Video of the rescue opened my eyes, never thought they would use a helicopter, always thought the rescuer would harness you up and you would abseil to the ground.
So pleased nobody was hurt in this avalanche, but wonder how long it would take to get everybody off the lift

Maybe the whole area underneath was unstable? Who knows

There may have been more risk from the area where the avalanche originated from, plus some of the terrain underneath the chairlift was buried under the debris, up to and including the base station. Safer to get folks well away from the site.

Thanks Bandit for putting the videos up

I suppose it's a reminder that a ski resort is not a children's playground - the slopes can be very dangerous

I'm glad everyone was okay :D

I've often worried that the chairlift would stop and I'd be stuck up there, but I never thought the whole thing would be hit by an avalanche.

Mind you, I've seen a lift on the glacier at Tignes after it had been wrecked by the glacier moving.

But what did they do with their skis? Seems strange that the helicopter took them off up to the top of the lift (very kind of them) but did not take the skis so they could carry on skiing.

Hope they got a lift refund

Only joking. Excellent work by the rescue people.
