Sanef, the French motorway operator has now extended its Liber-t automatic toll payment service to UK motorists. To use the service all you need to do is register online and we will send you a small electronic transponder (or tag) that you attach to your windscreen just behind the rear-view mirror. As you approach the barriers, a device by the barrier will read your transponder (or tag), securely extract your unique reference and then automatically open the barrier without you having to stop. You will receive an invoice the following month for your tolls and then around 15 days later we will automatically collect the payment in £ (GBP) from your bank account by direct debit from your UK bank account.

"Foolishly" travelling swiftly on superb and un-crowded (peak changeover days excepted) roads that go all the way to The Alps?
That's my kind of foolish!

I think you are both correct.
Personally, for a ski trip to the Alps, it is Autoroute all the way for me, however, for trips of a different type, such as the 24 Heures Du Mans, then N roads all the way. Especially now they have built an Autoroute most of the way to Le Mans which has taken almost all the traffic off of the N roads

The Liber-t toll tags purchased from http://www.saneftolling.co.uk are only for use in France and cannot be used in the UK at this time. We are hopeful that advances in interoperability between toll systems across Europe will mean that they will be able to be used on UK toll roads in the future.
You can no longer pay for a Liber-t tag by credit or debit card. This has been possible in the past but the doors are now closed to new customers wishing to pay this way and holders of Liber-t tags who currently pay by card will find their accounts being phased out by the end of 2012. This applies to accounts held with all French autoroute operators, not just Sanef. To sign up to the Liber-t service in France, you now need to have a French bank account and pay by direct debit. Sanef are the only French toll road operator that will allow you to pay by direct debit from a UK bank account via their UK subsidiary, Sanef Tolling UK who are based in Harrogate.
The Liber-t tag can only be used in light vehicles (less than 3m high and under 3.5tonnes GVW). This includes motorbikes, caravans and small motorhomes although use with a motorbike is limited as you need to use the manual lane to get charged at the class 5 rate so don't have the full benefit of using the automated lanes. The main advantage on a motorbike is that you don't need to fumble around for change / payment card with gloves on - you just hand the tag over to the operator in the booth and have the barcode scanned.
The tag is designed to be kept indefinitely. The battery in the tag lasts up to 7 years and we will send you a replacement after 5. We always recommend that customers weigh up the benefits of purchasing a tag against how frequently and how far they will be travelling on the autoroutes.
We are happy to offer members of this forum a €5 discount off the €10 setup fee for the Liber-t tag if they sign up using the link below:
