Ok, so I have been to Austria and we went to France last year so I wanted to try either switzerland or italy. i want to go somewhere where which is connected like the milky way. is there any other places that are like that in swizerland or italy. I know Tony has said that sauze is a good place to go, so i am looking to bag a bargain. this will be our 3rd family skiing holiday and looking for nice and cruisy, dont want a lot too challenging. we will be taking the kids out of school to go so i am not sure whether to go diy and book now taking advantage of the cheap flights by easyjet ( i think i looked at flying into geneva from newcastle) and hiring a car for the week to take us to the milky way. or do you think i should wait until nearer the time for a last minute bargain? what do you think?

For a family holiday I'd be wary of leaving it to the last minute - the bargains were not there last year in the way they have in the past.

I'd reccomend Sauze -lots of skiing for a range of abilities & links well to Sestriere, Sansicario & even Montegenevre on the French side (I think the pass only covers you for 1 day in Monte')
It's one of those resorts where you get the choice of the runs you want - there's often a blue red or black between A&B - you just pick the one you want.

Good advice re booking up for the family. I am told there are approx 1/3 less flights this season for package holidays so there will not be the deals as in previous seasons later on, except when the last couple of flight seats are left for example.

I'd book up now if I were you, but be aware that Sauze is probably not best very early or late season.
I went late Feb and we struggled with the snow and high temps.
I reckon mid to late Jan would be ideal.

Interesting how resorts can change in a relative short period of time back in the eighties it was the lager lout capitol of the alps, a kind of chilly Magaluf. 8)

Indeed. I went in Feb and March and it was very relaxed and chilled out. Having said that, the apres ski bars were always busy and full of British people only, no other nationalities seemed to be visiting the place.
It is a nice little town too, and some good skiing to be had on almost deserted pistes.
Mind you, I wouldn't want to go at New Year or Feb half term.

I have been trawling the old threads about sauze, which is where i fancied and they all said the same really and that was if conditions were good it was fantastic but very unreliable. is that the same for the whole of the milky way? might have to have a rethink. i havent ruled out austria and france, i just thought we should give somewhere else a try. i would be reluctant to go in january as i think it will be too cold for my youngest son and could potentially ruin the holiday whining about the cold so March would suit us better. we would like a large ski area that is interlinked

Hi Karen, just a point about cold and the kids ....... How old is your youngest as Little W has skied
since she was three years old, for the first couple of years she skied fully clothed as we could not find thermals to fit, she now skis in thermals, body layer and ski suit and has never complained about the cold apart from the odd time with her hands, And she has skied one time at -23, we do not spend megga amounts on ski suits as they only last for one season and we usually buy from H & M. If they are layered up they should not really feel the cold too much.

Ian my youngest is 10 and he could win an oscar for over-dramatising how cold it is. he is so skinnyhe could snap and does feel the cold more. when we were in valmorel this year, the wind picked up and itwas really chilly, especially on your hands buthonestly he was hysterical and that was in March so i wouldnt like to tempt going in Jan! my other son could ski naked and not be bothered by the cold.
