I was thinking the last time I went skiing, I was getting tired quickly when on flatter terrain. I ski in the northwest, so the snow is a little wet. Is there a technique to use on flatter terrain that does not take a lot of effort? :p

I had the same problem before. And I suggest that you should work-out on a gym because it really helps a lot. Maybe a half an hour per will give you the strength you needed.

Improved Fitness and Improved Technique will both work wonders for coping with the flats. Raised general fitness (gym work) and some ski-relevant exercise like roller-blading will help improve your stamina when skating.

Also focus on carving properly - skidded turns waste an enormous amount of energy. Skidding makes really hard work of gentler gradients, whereas carving the ski will conserve energy and is a whole lot less effort.
