Gudauria = Georgia

Ok...

The last Gudauri thread was a blatant plug.

This is too but in a different guise.

Im not advertising.

I was working in Georgia for the best part of 2008 and I had the fortune to find a day in Gudauri where I experienced some of the best snow I have riden.

I have skied all over Europe, France - Austria , Germany, Italy, Switzerland

I had the good furtune to take a day trip to Gudauri while working here.

I just came online to check the snow report of the ski area as I am back in Tbilisi on holiday and brought my skis incase the conditions are worth the 2 hour drive.

There are limited lifts- - heli skiing is dirty cheap however and free ride is fantastic -

I was hoping to get out and do some proper back country this winter but the snow conditions seems to conspire against me.

If you are in the region it is worth a trip up.

Stood at the top of the third lift looking over the Caucasus it gives you the feeling you are discovering something quite new.

This is not like skiing anywhere else in Europe and you do have to watch out for the drunk locals at the bottom of the lower slopes - they get pi$$ed and ski in Jeans and nothing more than their street wear.

over 50% of the pop'n here is under the povery line so dont expect a beach full of spider clad ladies taking in the sun. Expect a few Tbilisi girls in big sun glasses who are more elegant at the side of the slope than on it. Watch out for totally incapable locals who pack more bravado than skill and enjoy a raw day out.

I would say that staying on piste you can make a day of it- 2 max - back country with guides and Heli's at your disposal - ski till the guide gives up and the snow melts... this is a wonderful place.

When you say that the heli drops are dirt cheap, how much is dirt cheap....?
