They aren't really an essential piece of kit to be honest, I only use one when packing my skis to put on the plane so they don't rub against too each other and possibly scratch.. hehe
But I guess if you're one for hiking it that bit extra up a slope you can't reach otherwise, yeah a ski tie would be good to make it easier to carry :)

Ski ties are nice if you are loading skis in, and out of cars, for transporting skis in top boxes, or the back of a van, and if you walk any distance with your skis. They stop that tell tale scraping on the base near the tips, and just make carrying ski and other stuff easier.
The only thing I like to see is that the foam rubber part is not slippery. They tend to slid down on very shaped skis.

I've got a nice bright pink one which helps me locate my skis after a break!

Mine are tied all the time when they are at home or travelling.
Nothing special required, just big enough to wrap round your skis!
