Hi all,
We (the family) have today booked to go to Ellmau on the 6th Feb 2010. We have done numerous French resorts but this is a first for Austria. Can anyone enlighten me further on the delights of skiing/boarding in this country. My only worry is that at 650m the resort doesn't seem very high. Am I right to be concerned about snowfall or am I being silly?

Hi and welcome to J2ski.
You will enjoy Ellmau, it is a pretty village. You have access to the Skiwelt, 250km of skiing. The whole area of Ellmau is covered by snow cannons, and February has the best historical snowfall.
There are one or two lovely old hotels in Ellmau, and a beautiful chapel as you ski into the village.

Thanks Dave. Feeling better about it already. Excited and can't wait ...not that I'm counting but only 64 days 5 hours and 48 minutes to take off. Bring it on!

I think you will find that after your first trip to Austria, you will go back more often. Compared to france, its a totally different vibe. Depends where you have been before though I guess in terms of comparing the skiing, but no to resorts in the world are alike.

Cant really go wrong with the Skiwelt, loads of snowmaking capacity & miles of piste. Absolutely love the place, will ski a few days there over Chrimbo.

Its a lovely little village. We are off again on 19th (2 weeks to go!) after a fantastic Christmas two years ago.
Lots of families - mainly dutch - when we were there last time, but our young teens were quite happy!

We are staying in The Alpenhof. Maybe someone can tell us if you can ski to the door (or pretty close by). Last year we were in Les Deux Alpes and we had difficult runs into the resort so we're hoping that they are nice blues and reds back to the hotel.

I can't remember where the Alpenhof is. We stayed in the Sporthotel which was really near to the nursery slopes/ski school. Certainly easy enough for the kids (then 13/14) to ski back on their own.
