Then we could chat (if we wanted) to our friends on here without it always being public. Or do people prefer to chat in a public environment? There is the PM but it is not quite the same as real time chat - what do people think?

PSC, I think that is the reason that the facebook bump group was created. As a chat group, it could sit alongside J2ski, and people could chat to each other. It wouldn't be wibble, it would be non-ski.
The fact is that people choose not to use it.
By and large J2ski threads start off as ski related threads, just so. In the summer, it gets a bit non-ski, but that just keeps things moving.
The real issue is that threads divert wildly, and end up in wibble alley. Like others, I am guilty, now and again, it is, I guess, a question of degree.
I think J2 is a great vehicle for skiing, I would go stronger, and say that for many people, it is important. It is a big diseminator of knowledge and humour. We just need to use it wisely.
