Ok guys I need some help......

Where would you recommend to go skiing for a couple of days in New Zealand. It makes no difference to me whether it is North or South Island as I am traveling around both islands access won't be a problem either as I am hiring a car. Unfortunately it will only be a couple of days as I have family, friends and lots of places to see in my 4 weeks.

I am hoping some of you guys can help as it will to save me having to hunt around and research and therefore waste my valuable surfing time in Peru or chilling time in the Galapagos

If you are after something different and your budget can stretch to it, have a look at Cat Skiing with Alpure Peaks in South Canterbury (http://www.alpurepeaks.co.nz). It's like heli-skiing but with a snowcat instead of a helicopter, and it's way cheaper and so awesome. You get 8 or 9 runs down a whole mountainside with just you and 9 others.

Hope you like it.

Hi Brimster,

I copied your qusetion to a friend in New Zealand, and here is her reply:

Skiing for two days. Definitely the South Island - more reliable weather and snow conditions. For an all-round good time, my favourite is the Cardrona skifield, near Wanaka. If she's an experienced skier, Mt Hutt (inland from Christchurch) or the Remarkables (Queenstown). All 3 have lovely scenic views and usually good weather."

Let me know how you get on.

Hi Dave Mac

Thanks for the PM and answer on here. I haven't had chance to get on here for awhile as the traveling has been keeping me busy! I am currently in Te Anau and head to Queenstown either tomorrow or Monday depending on the weather! I am trying to get to Milford Sounds however the road is closed due to a high avalanche risk - snow chains are in the car so i am ready to go

I have been checking out the different resorts and the forecasts and think I am going to go with The Remarkables. However they did shut for 2 days last week due to weather so am hoping it improves over the next couple of days as I am running out of time in New Zealand.....

Will let you all know how I get on next week!

Hope you made it to the Remarkables, Brimster.

There is a Scottish couple living Queenstown. Both were at one time instructors on Cairngorm, and then, at the same time as me, in Niederau.

Kinsey looks after the local gold shop. Form a queue please. Can't remember what Jim did. We re-met them in Queenstown about five years ago.

I haven't made it to The Remarkables yet!

The Milford Sound road opened up unpredictably on Monday as we were leaving so ended up spending another night in Te Anau. However it wouldn't have made much difference as The Remarkables have been shut for the past few days due to wind! The weather forecast is looking much better for tomorrow and Friday so I will hopefully get some skiing in then.

I will give a full report on Sunday when I am bored in Christchurch airport.....

I enjoyed Te Anau. When I was there, the Milford Sound was closed. Ended up going on Doubtful Sound. Still mightly impressive.
My old ski mate was the build engineeer that built the hotels on the Milford Sound.

Christchurch is quite lovely, I do hope that you enjoy that.

Crikey Dave. You seem to have a story about someone you know who happens to live somewhere someone mentions around the world. You really must be a lucky and well connected man. Or the biggest B***S****er going )
