Hi
Has anyone done this drive? Just wondered from 'personal experience' what it is like - and am I likely to need snow chains - or is it fairly main roads!
I am going 29th Jan - 02nd Feb (quickie snowboard get away!)
First time to France and Brides/Meribel (I am Austria die hard usually) so any hints and tips related would also be a great help - thanks!

Hi,
If your flying in to Geneva airport make sure you know which "side" your car is. You could queue on the Swiss side for an hour before realising your car is on the French side. If it is on the French side you will get quicker more friendly service but take special care with the directions for returning your car.

And it's shorter leaving the motorway on the GVA side of Annecy.
The drive is easy:
Annecy to Albertville to Moutiers to Brides. Om a clear road no more than an hour and a half.

You'd be very unlucky to need chains, but there are rare occasions when you might need them. How much extra does the carehire company charge you to have them?

Have done that drive serveral times in the last few years and never had any need for snow chains, but i guess theres alwasy a first....

The roads are pretty well sign posted and I've never had a problem finding my way even when travelling solo on my second trip.

They want about 69euros for hires of chains and a ski rack - not too bad I suppose - will see when I get there what car I get and go from there!
Flying into the French side.

Thanks for all the advise!

Rather than going through Annecy itself and down by the lake to Ugine, then Albertville, I find it quicker to stay on the autoroute via Chambery and then up to Albertville - negotiating Annecy and all the traffic lights, roundabouts by the lake etc takes more time
