Hey everyone, just from having a little browse through the topics on these forums i've noticed that quite a lot of you go to Niederau.
Was just wondering what the big obsession is? :-) I'm not judging - Just wanting to know what's so good.. If it's THAT good then I might end up there myself sometime and become one of you! :D
Skiing: the art of catching cold and going broke while rapidly heading nowhere at great personal risk.

I asked a similar question and got this.. I am sure there will be more responses.

I guess that I am the other most regular writer on Niederau. I have spent so much time there, I know a lot about the place, and I am always happy to help those that have specific queries. I have no commercial interest.

In truth, I would be the wrong person to ask, because I suspect that you would be looking for km of skiing, total number of blacks, night life. Someone else can do that.

When you go back to the same place on a regular basis, over a long period, you get to know a lot about the place, the people, characters, history, building, art, music, village life. So for me, it has a great life value, as good as, but different from that of the small village that I live by. I lived there for four winters, and instructed there. My friend died in a ski accident and is buried in the churchyard.

I don't care that it is a small ski resort, don't mind doing the same run over again, I know 10,000 different ways down! To me, skiing is body poetry.

What is interesting to me is the number of people, both on J2ski and those I meet skiing, who also have gained an affinity with the village. I too would be interested in the answers.

What myself and the family like about Niederau is that it feels like a second home to us. Particularly when we went back last year. The instructors recognised us immediately. It felt like we hadn't been away for more than a few days rather than a year. Everyone there is so friendly and helpful. The hotel we stayed at was incredibly good to us (The Austria Hotel). Those of you who have been to Niederau will know what I mean.

This year we're off to Yllas in Lapland, but will certainly return to Niederau again. For us that's saying something as we rarely go back anywhere twice.

hi ross f,
you are soooo right, i can ski niederau a hundred times and it is different every time. the merkenwiess is endlessly challenging. last week, gipfel was horrid to me, whereas before now, i've loved it!

each time i go there (now 20 years, summer and winter), i am welcomed as an old friend. the locals make no fuss, just nod at me, and i know that i'm safe, regarded and well thought of - at least i hope i am. i can walk int a bar alone and sit, without being hassled and without being thought of as weird or as on the pull!
i love it there, and i WILL buy a flat there one day. L.
