Hi Just checked the snow report for Soll, Austria as i am booked for a week there on the 14th of april. Snow has been looking good for a while but the snow report now says the area is closed. Does anyone know if this is the area closed for the season and if so where is good to drive to from there??

Hi
i had a look around and that seems to be what has happend. It may be just for a short time - so keep looking. Did you book with a company or have you done it indipendantly?

Had a quick look at Tiscover website and the area comes up as closed alright (a look at one of the webcams suggests that the weather is bad so maybe it is just a temporary closure), though the snow report does suggest that the snow is excellent!!!

If it is closed for the season rather than just temporarily due to bad weather, Kitzbuhel is quite close (maybe half an hour or so in a car). Obviously, it would be a pain travelling back and forward each day so you might be better off checking to see if you can change your arrangements.

If you have booked with a tour operator, I would get on to them to find out what is going on - there is no way they should be taking a ski booking for a resort that is closed - they might be able/prepared to move you to another resort.

Good luck.

If you are with a tour operator they cannot take you to a closed resort and will have to take you somewhere else or pay your holiday back - however if it is because of the weather you cannot do anything except claim missed ski days and loss of use of lift pass from your insurance.
If you are indipendant it may be worth seeing if you can change arrangements!

Thanks for all the advice. We booked independently, having caught the skiing bug last year and went to france in the christmas and april breaks we thought we would do the same with Austria this year! Looks like its not going to pan out so well but hopefully we will find somewhere open even if we do have a bit of a journey!! Thanks again I'm a beginner and my other half is high intermediate so any advice on where we could go? Thanks again.

On Tuesday, 1st April, I could see (from Niederau), that the Westendorf and Hopfgarten lifts were closed, so it is a fair bet that the Ski-Welt closed on Sunday, along with most other similar resorts. Auffach closes this Sunday.

I checked on the Kitzbuehle berglift web site, and this also closes on the 6th.

Mid-April is too late for the skiing in Tirol. It isn't a case of the lift operator running the lifts if there is snow on the ground. There is a big infrastructure that slots into place, and has to be organised well in advance.

The nearest place to Soell that I can think of might be Kaprun, (booring), or the Stubai Gletcher. Oh and maybe high up in the Zillertal, Kaltenbach, or maybe Obergurgl/Hochgurgl

You should be able to cancel your accomodation. There are clear government-lead Ts&Cs in Tirol, where costs that have been incurred can be charged to you. Definitely worth trying.

Depending on your incoming airport, and if you have car hire, you can just check up where snow conditions are good and the lift system open.

Just checked, Obergurgl/Hochgurgl lift site, this is listed as open til the end of April.

You could also try St Anton. Whereever you look at, check that both beginner & intermediate slope lifts are open.

Good Luck
