My wife and I wish to book a serviced chalet for all the family in mid-Feb but are afraid of expending a lot of dosh and not getting any snow. Whilst we realise it is not possible to absolutely guarantee snow is there a resort in France which is "more likely than most" to have snow for a big, adult family ski holiday who like to party after the skiing ?? Any advise on resorts would be great - France if possible - but if not then Austria/Italy/Switzerland acceptable .

A selection of places that are high and will almost certainly have good snow: Tignes, Val d'Isere, Chamonix, Val Thorens, Les Arcs, Avoriaz, Courchevel, Saas Fee, Zermatt...the list goes on!

If you're going in mid February, I don't think you need worry too much, most places will be in full swing and early snowfalls have been good all over the Alps.

If you're after snow right down to village level, remember that ski in/ski out accomodation very rarely goes with charming characterful French villages - or not without paying a lot. But still, in February, there should be good snow everywhere.

What are your priorities? Ski in/Ski out? Beautiful resort with great scenery? Pretty village? massive ski area? What level of skiing are you looking for?

I think the issue at that time of year is not so much the snow (which will be good at all the big high resorts and lots of the smaller ones) as finding the right place at a good price at those peak times....From your signature it sounds like you might enjoy something a bit more authentically French than the big purpose built resorts too?

So perhaps somewhere that gives you access to the Portes de Soleil area like Chatel (or Morzine if you wanted a bit more liveliness). Saas Fee and Zermatt have lots of Swiss charm and again access some very high areas. Chamonix has great nightlife, is rivalled only by Zermatt for scenery and by nobody for character and slopes, but doesn't have much ski in/ski out - though of course I am biased :) !

Hope this helps.

Then what do you think about the snow in St Sorlin d'Arves (Les Sybelles)? Right now the forecast is good, but how will it be from 19th january? Any experiences? Is the end of january a good time as well?

Hope to hear from you!

I would reccommend any of FRANCE top ski resorts, Val Thorens, Val'disere etc. Good altitude. However these places seem to be getting more exspensive each year, as the ski companies are getting wise to the fact that you can guarante snow here, and therefore bumping up the prices. I have been skiing in France for several years, and this year hopefully going to USA/Canada where the price is the same in Europe, and there is less people on the slope. Have fun!
Bring it on...

By the look of the snow falls the last couple of days, I would say you will have some snow in Feb about anywhere in the Alps.
To be on a safe side book somewhere above 1500 m but even under this level this year should be no problem !!!
