I'm flying into Turin at the start of Feb & just wondering what sort of time delay to expect at Turin Airport with the new entry system.

It is impossible to say at this time because the EES is being introduced gradually and will not be fully operational until April 2025. By 11 November 2025, each Schengen area state was supposed to register 10% of third-country citizens entering the Schengen area in the EES. However, they didn't have to register biometric data up until 11 December 2025. By 10 January 2026, they are supposed to register the biometric data of 35% of third-country nationals entering the Schengen area in the EES. This figure is supposed to rise to 50% by 11 March 2026, with the aim of registering biometric data from everyone by 10 April 2026.

The EES-ETIAS Advisory Group met on 2–3 December 2025 and was satisfied with the progress made to date. The system appears to be functioning as expected. However, delays are likely due to several planes carrying third-country citizens arriving one after another, and if there are not be enough border guards to operate the system. I don't know if the Italians have employed extra border guards, but at Zurich Airport, the cantonal police force, who control the border, employed an additional 40 officers. However, at Geneva Airport, where the border is controlled by the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security, no additional officers have been employed.

Just to add to what Swingbeep said; going from comments seen on Facebook and other ski sites, it seems quite random whether EES machines are operated on a particular day at any given airport. After initial queues at Geneva, for example, they turned the machines off on the peak weekends over the holiday but how long they continue doing that remains to be seen.

The gradual introduction of the EES is governed by EU regulation 2025/1534. During the introduction, member states may fully or partially suspend the operations of the EES in the case of failure of the EES Central System, of national systems or of communication infrastructure that significantly disrupts the operations of the EES, or in exceptional circumstances that lead to traffic of such intensity that the waiting time at a border crossing point becomes excessive. So, until the system has been fully implemented and is operating as planned delays will vary.

I flew into Geneva mid-December and there were long passport queues but the EES machines had been turned off so just the normal post Brexit ones, so that fits with comments above. Presumably turned off to stop queue getting even worse. A friend had been through day before and said they'd been on then with minimal impact, but assuming fewer people coming in at time of his arrival. The automatic barriers for EU/Schengen arrivals had no queues and we gazed at them longingly from our self-inflicted one.
