So for ages I've been toying with the idea with driving over to France to go skiing. Some untimely car thefts have meant that one of our cars is now AWD.

When visiting Val d'Isere in March I couldn't help but notice how many Tesla's and ID 3's were in the resort.

And I got to thinking..... why not?

After a recent 620 mile round trip (charging twice) that was pretty much painless I thought I'd ask the question here?

Anyone done it?

I look forward to hearing about your experiences if you've done it.

Cheers!

Finally went off Piste!

I drove in a Ford MachE in April to Les 2 Alpes. Wasn't without issues, but if I'd had the car for longer and planned slightly better it would have been fine. Will be doing again in a Tesla this coming winter.

Since then done a second trip. re temperatures, Rob at Coolbus, whose fleet of Tesla X's have done over 500,000km reports a reduction of range of 20% when temperatures hit zero.

interesting only 20%. I don't own one so only basing comments on what I read in the press...
"In 2021, Citizens United for Consumer Sovereignty, a South Korean consumer group, said the driving range of most EVs drop by up to 40 per cent in cold temperatures"
"at minus 15 degrees the average EV had only 54 per cent of its rated range, the study found."

-15C is pretty cold! That wouldn't surprise me. How often is it like that at resort level or below in Europe? Pretty rare I think. Once in resort, you're probably not going to be using the car.

I think what is key though is making sure that you have a lot in the 'tank' before you do the final ascent to any resort as this burns through miles so much quicker than on the flat. If it was cold as well I'd want to have a lot of reserve in there. (Coming down is the opposite - you actually add miles to the range)

There are lots of EVs in the alps, in 2022 the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling car in Switzerland, the Model 3 was the 5th best seller and the Škoda Enyaq was the 7th. Apart from the palaver involved in re-charging during the journey you should be fine.

There has been a marked increase in average temperatures in recent years.

For the most part it doesn't get anywhere near as cold as it used to do. Where I live the grass is still green, the catkins have come out and the daffodils are poking through. 20 years ago, the ground would have been frozen hard during January.

Good to know, like I said I don't own one, nor live in the mountains or other cold climate. Just interested in the real-life stat quoted as it makes a decent comparison to the media coverage.
Wonder what Korea is thinking taking on Tesla in the courts, given what you guys are saying.
