I booked a weekend ski trip to the Jungfrau region and will be staying in Grindelwald in January 2022, not realizing the Lauberhorn ski race is the same weekend. I am not interested in watching the race, I just want to ski. I am looking for advice on how to avoid long lift lines and crowds. I'd love to hear from anyone who has attended the event and the best way to manage the weekend.

Hi Bestormy, I have skied that area and love it, you should have a great weekend. I have not skied it while the circus was in town though, having said that I have been in Val D'Isere when they were racing on La Face, and tbh apart from a couple of lifts closed for race use, you would not really have noticed anything different on the mountain.

I would have thought that as long as you don't want to ski down into Wengen, you probably won't notice a huge difference on the mountain. Most spectators will get the train up, so just stick to the other lifts and you can always stick in the area behind Grindelwald, which is a totally different valley to where the race is anyway.

Just try and get involved in some of the nightlife though if you can :)

Hello Far Queue,
Thanks for the useful advice. I last skied at Grindelwald in 1980 while on a backpacking trip through Europe. I am from Wisconsin where our tallest ski hill is 200 meters. All I remember is skiing in blue jeans and crappy gloves on the most beautiful mountain I had ever seen and spending the night in a youth hostel with about 20 other backpackers in the same room. It will be great to go back.
