Hi all

we are planning a trip to Borovets in mid jan.
there will be bunch of us and few are into touring and offpiste
has anyone gone on Masala track recently(or in similar conditions (~50cm of snow) can you skin up all the way or do you need crampons on some segments? (i know that the summit narrow and is secured with steel wire handholds)

also what is Bulgarian practice on radio stations can we use them for internal communication (we normally use S10 Channel but we can switch to PMR frequencies if its ilegal to use s10 in Bulgaria?)

Drones? can you fly and film w/o permits?

Is there active avalanche service in Borovets do they use recco and/or transponders?

any other advice for "pandemic" skiing in Borovets?

Thanks in advance

in January the snow cover is not that great to worry about avalanches. from Borovets all the way up to the top at mount Mussala 2925m there is good GSM reception(excluding about 30minutes section) so no need to carry walkie talkies. You can climb to the Ice lake and then without skis all the way to top or just take your skis all the way and then ski down toward the lake if capable . When you at at the lake hut -have a look up and decide if it is in your capabilities . It is popular destination so you will no need to fresh track steps on the way up. You can record with drones -there are no restrictions unless on the pistes or on the lift and flying your drone while on the chair lift which is forbidden. NOTE:if you decide to get to the top carry a pair of workers gloves for the last stretch where you have to hold the metal rope . I have done it many times even with normal ski gear ski boots skis without ski skins or lifting heels. Basically you take the last drag lift (or the chair ) traverse accross straight to the Mussala Hut . from there (have a tea drink) and start climbing on the path . 2hrs you are at the Ice Hut and 60 mins (approx) to the top. on the way back is 5 minutes skiing to the Ice hut then 10ish to the other hut and another 10 to the drag or chair lift.there is a webcam from the weather report station on Mussala so you can see the condish at the moment(if visible). here is the link: https://www.windy.com/-Webcams/Bulgaria/Sofia/Samokov/Musala-Sofiya-%C2%A9-%D0%A3%D0%95%D0%91-%D0%9A%D0%90%D0%9C%D0%95%D0%A0%D0%90-%D0%92%D0%A0%D0%95%D0%9C%D0%95%D0%A2%D0%9E-%D0%91%D0%95%D0%9E-%D0%92%D0%A0%D0%AA%D0%A5-'%D0%9C%D0%A3%D0%A1%D0%90%D0%9B%D0%90'-%D0%92%D0%A0%D0%95%D0%9C%D0%95%D0%A2%D0%9E-%D0%92-%D0%A0%D0%98%D0%9B%D0%90-%D0%9F%D0%9B%D0%90%D0%9D%D0%98%D0%9D%D0%90-%D0%9C/webcams/1445001363?42.178,21.940,8
