Insoles....

Does anybody take/use their own insoles for their hire boots?

which insoles do you recommend? pros or cons

The hire ones are usually a little "used" and so I am thinking about getting some.
I know getting your own boots is by far the best option but unfortunately not for me :)

Insoles mean a custom fit but you'd also get the whole liner sorted and maybe need ramps. This doesn't sound condusive with a whole boot fit.

The compromise you are inviting is basically having a footbed in a hughely variable hire boot platform.

Most it would probably amout to is a comfort option.

I don't think this is such a bad idea. I use Sorbothane Shock Doctor insoles in lots of things including ski boots (fairly normal feet custom insoles not needed).
Anything that may improve comfort and fit has got to be a good idea.

You might look at off the shelf footbeds like Superfeet. Properly supported feet will really help your skiing. Some knowledgeable help choosing the right type, make, size is strongly advised. You may have an issue with cutting them to size. If you always rent the same type of boot, use the original innersole as a guide. You may have to fiddle around a bit to get the footbeds in exactly the right position in the boot (especially if they have been trimmed a little small).
