Well, I've finally done what I've been threatening to do and forsake the main ski trip to Switzerland for a holiday in Are next March! We're combining it with a weekend in Stockholm and taking the night train sleeper from the Swedish capital to Are, which sounds like it could be fun! I know there's a couple of Are fans on J2Ski so any tips/pointers would be appreciated. We're staying at the Fjallgarden Hotel just above the main village.

LOTA, you'll love it. There's a few trip reports on here somewhere that will give you some pointers. Things that spring immediately to mind are: the high zone doesn't open very often so when it does get up there. Do the early morning skiing before the snow gets too chopped up on the run back to the main chair/gondola. Do the night skiing in the central area (not in Duved) because the lighting effects are weird/creepy/scary. Get over to Duved at least once for a change of atmosphere. Booze is not cheap if drinking out (but may be compared to Switzerland) but reasonably priced from the System.

A couple of questions, Dobby, if I may? We have booked our lift passes, at the earlybird price, online via the SkiStar website. Did you do this? And if so, do you collect the passes from the SkiStar office on production of the receipt? Many thanks, in advance.

Hi Lota. We bought our ski star passes in hemsedal, and topped them up when visiting åre. We did do the early bird to get money off passes and skis. Don't know if skistar will send you the passes. You can always email them. Skistar used to do 8 days for the cost of 6 too

Thank you. Just an update on our trip as I have been enjoying watching the snow fall on webcams over the last week or so. We've changed hotels and will now be staying in the Aregarden close to the main square. A better location, slightly better price and where we want to be for taking full advantage of the various ski areas. Have to say SkiStar have a slick operation going - lift passes and private lessons booked and I now have all the information on their mobile telephone app - very modern. Looking forward to it very much now (and, for good measure, have booked a late blast in Saas Fee in April!)
