The snowstorms in California have now started to reach record levels in terms of all-time February snowfall totals.
Squaw Valley reported last night that it had had more snowfall this February than for any previous February on record.
It has had 196 inches (4.9 metres) of snowfall this month so far.
The resort's upper base depth passed the 5-metre mark yesterday after almost 1.8 metres (6 feet) of snow accumulated over the past three days.
Mammoth Mountain, which has had another 1.2 metres (4 feet) of snow in the past 72 hours and has the deepest base in North America at 5.7 metres (19 feet), says it too has set an all-time February snowfall record, set in 1986.
It reports that even at the base the snow is 4.5 met5res (15 feet) deep and recently said that it will be staying open to July 4th.
All the snowfall, sometimes accompanied by very strong winds, has caused lots of operating difficulties and safety concerns of course but ski areas are battling to remain open with teams digging out chairlifts.
The snowfall is expected to ease off over the coming week allowing ski areas to re-open more terrain with deep powder conditions.
