Snow in The Pyrenees

J2SkiNews posted Jan-2019

Snow has begun falling again in the Pyrenees after more than a month without snow.

So far the biggest accumulations have been on the French side of the southern mountain range with Les Angles (pictured above today) issuing a powder alarm for an average 25cm of fresh snow overnight and says more than 30cm of snow fell on upper slopes.

The resort is currently stormbound with strong winds but has announced plans to open at least 18 runs when it re-opens, more than double the nine that had been open.

The Pyrenees got off to a great start to the season with huge snowfalls in late October which leg one Spanish resort to make its earliest ever opening in more than 60 years of operations on 1st December. It stayed snowy through November but the snowfalls slowed and stopped in early December.

Despite this many resorts had good bases built from the early snow and temperatures allowed for snowmaking so most of the bigger resorts have had most of their slopes open, albeit with white ribbons of piste down green and brown hillsides on lower runs in many areas.

That picture is changing now though. In Andorra temperatures are currently in the double digits below zero Celsius and Grandvalira reports 12cm of fresh snow overnight. Vallnord also reports powder conditions.
More snow is forecast for the weekend.

Grandvalira does not however report storm force winds and lift closures!
