At Least ONE More Glacier Ski Area Opening for Season on Saturday

J2SkiNews posted Sep-2018

Austria's Kaunertal glacier (pictured above) will begin the 2018-19 ski season this Saturday, on the last weekend of September.

It'll join half-a-dozen already open ski areas in Austria, Italy and Switzerland.

[Tignes, France will not open this coming weekend as hoped - SEE BELOW]

After a snowy start to September It has been warm in the Alps in recent weeks and one glacier that should be open, Molltal, closed a few weeks ago whilst awaiting fresh snow.

However medium-term forecasts are now expecting temperatures to forecast by the weekend with the possibility of snow on Sunday.

Three more Austrian glacier ski areas, at Stubai, the Kitzsteinhorn and Solden usually open in September but so far do not appear to have done so or to announce an opening date. Solden is due to stage World Cup ski racing in just over a month's time hosting the season openers.

Update as at 25th September - Tignes will NOT be opening this weekend! :(

Tignes wrote:*Opening originally planned on September 29th 2018, postponed due to adverse snow conditions. Another opening date will be released as soon as precipitations are forecasted.

Was looking at it yesterday and thinking it was the worst condition I can ever recall seeing it. Hope they get some soon, the schools and pre season warm up trips will all be leaving in the next few weeks.
