Tips on Mayrhofen

Me and HID moving out of our comfort zone and moving out of Italy and trying Mayrhofen B&B for the first time. Any tips on places to eat and drink, not necessarily the party ones would be appreciated and best areas to take a nervous Skier.

There is a small bar opposite the entrance to the Penkenbahn which is owned by an ex ski racer, we used to end up stopping in there everyday on the way back down. Nice friendly bar. There is also a butcher next door to it that serves the most fantastic food.

Otherwise, there are loads of bars and restaurants, it really will be a case of whatever takes your fancy.

With a nervous skier, you may just need to see how busy the different areas are each day, but don't rule out the Ahorn side which is often quiter because it is smaller. Also, you can hop on the bus and pop up to the Hintertux galcier, nice big wide pistes and not usually as busy.

You will need to either ski down elsewhere and get the bus back or come down in the Penkenbahn at the end of the day. This can mean it gets really busy at this time, so bear that in mind with a nervous skier.

You should enjoy it though, I loved it and will deffo go back.

Remembered the name of the small bar, it is called the Happy End. We also went into Mo's a fair bit, the food looked pretty good in there, but we were eating in our hotel.

The "Neue Post Hotel" has a nice traditional/old fashioned menu at a very reasonable price, their schnitzels are superb - from about 5 visits I have never had a bad meal of either meat dishes or vegetarian.
Konditorei Kostner is great for cakes and hot drinks, not as great for meals.

Skiing - Mayrhofen is my favorite Zillertal resort for beginner or nervous skiers. There is a good variety of long and/or wide blue pistes that is with chair lifts (rather than T-bars)
The best blue piste on Penken is Blue 14 that is parallel to the Tappenalm chairlift. Other fine runs are Blue 28 & 29 but they are cat-tracks so not as wide as a regular piste.
Also the blue (67 & 63)/red runs on the plateau you get to with the 150'er Gondel are nice - just don't do the Red 66 back down with a nervous skier (moguls + ice) - take the 150'er back down.

Regarding Hintertux - there is lots of big wide pistes (mostly red) - but be warned the blue 17 has a steep red stretch (50 meter approx.) just after the Tuxerjoch restaurant and there is no way around it - other than zigzagging across the piste! Just warning as it can be scary for some people.

This is a fantastic place to eat. Authentic Austrian cuisine and fairly reasonable too.

I know you've mentioned "not the party ones", but I have to give a mention to Mo's Esscafe & Musicroom. They have great live bands and most people are seated throughout the evening.

With regards to restaurants, I was really impressed with the following:

Pane e Vino de Michele - Italian restaurant with really great seafood
Steakhouse Tirol - You've guessed it... I enjoyed the steaks!

So I skied Mayrhofen around 7 times but haven't been in a good 7-8 years. I know there's been a major investment in the lifts and would like to see how the new Penken lift is.

Its not an area for nervous skiers - it can be mad busy, and there's a number of rat runs that everyone has to use. Having said that, I liked the way you could bomb around the place and travel area to area.

I understand the Horberg area has altered a bit, but red 7 used to be my favourite run. Right over the back, with a great cafe half way down serving the best apfelstrudl and custard ever.

Eggalm was more chilled, lovely ribs over the back to Rastkogel, and I liked taking the train/bus down to Zell and skiing a different area for the day. Never got to Fugen. Hintertux is big and worth at least a day of your time. Some more relaxed and longer runs over there.

In town, Ulli Spiess probably still runs the Happy End along with the lovely cafe up the Ahorn (the long Abfahrt run off the Ahorn can be absolutely epic, and despite some steep sections, a competent skier will comfortably make it down and its seriously worth it).

Mo's was always the place we spent most time in in town, decent food and drink. There were a few Pizza places springing up too, they were all ok. Of the hotels we tried, the Neue Post was excellent, Manis was also good, and we never ever had anything but a good meal and superb service at the Kramerwirt.

Crikey, this has got my juices flowing......maybe a trip back is required!!!!
