If you are driving to Austria this year you can now buy the vignette online...BUT you MUST purchase at least 18 days before as they seem to have a problem with cooling off periods..laughable

Good piece of info, thanks, Daved. It's no big deal to pull off the autobahn and buy the vignette, takes 10 minutes max.
I do check how far I can legally go on the Autobahn without the vignette, when travelling from Munich. It used to be Kufstein Sud, but is now a stop further north. I then travel by backroads to Worgl. Once in the Alps, I don't need a vignette, driving from Niederau through the Skiwelt, Kitzbuhel, St Johann, etc for days out.
I have a Salzburg superskicard season pass for this winter, since I have three trips planned, with a probable fourth trip to be arranged, so the vignette is likely to loom.

It should be noted that the Vignette you buy online is digital. In other words, you don't need to stick it in your windscreen.
With regards to the need to buy at least 18 days beforehand, this is due to the fact that they must allow for a 14 day cooling off period which is part of European law for any product you buy online.

Just to add to this, I purchased my Vignette and Brenner Pass Toll online this year. When coming back over the pass yesterday I was the only car which used the automated lane for pre payments and did not even have to slow below 10mph, the queues for the other lanes were approx 30 cars long per lane. It was a similar story on my way into Italy two weeks ago, so considering it is exactly the same cost, it is a no briner to pre-purchase the tolls imo.
