I've never been to Austria or Zell am Zee before. Can anyone advise of some good pistes for the day time and some great apres ski in Zell in the evening?
On the piste maps I can see some Ski routes - what are these? Are they suitable for intermediates?

Look forward to hearing from the forums.

I always think of Austria as traditional skiing, traditional huts on the mountain and beautiful villages. Never been to Zell am Zee but heading off to Hochkonig in the morning which is really close by.

In terms of ski routes my understanding is that these are marked but not maintained pistes. They will have sign posts but won't be groomed. I am not 100% sure if you insurance covers you on them but I may be wrong. They are half way between on piste and off piste. I have ski'd a few and enjoyed them.

Have fun in Zell am Zee.

I stayed in Kaprun in January which is part of Zell and quite enjoyed the place the bus service in either direction was excellent and it is an ideal place to stay to enable skiing in either resort. The run down to Schuttedorf in Zell was great early on but in the evening it became very icy and was filled with falling beginners as it is supposedly the easiest way down …I found the most convenient way down was the run down the under the City Express lift ..there is a blue trail but the black isn't that bad and the benefit is that you can catch the bus in the centre of Zell with no queues ..by the time it gets to Schuttedorf its crammed..Kaprun , which is on the same lift pass is much more open glacier skiing if that is to your taste and as I said the us service is excellet
A nice place great for a weeks skiing ..

Thanks for the update Markinkent and Daved. In your experience are the skiroutes and black runs easier/the same/harder than black runs in the 3 valleys. I am okay at steep but steep and narrow or moguls of any kind and I struggle.
Can't wait to get to Zell at the end of Jan.

most of the black runs were just steep ..but when we were there they were icy ..no real mogul fields ..the only run in either resort that i didn't like was was Gotschel
