Truly dreadful.

Search is still underway according to Le Dauphine.

Two confirmed dead, two in a "desperate state", one seriously injured and five still missing.
Mostly youngsters too. If the reports are correct they were on a closed Black run at Level 4 Avalanche Risk.

Struggling to write this one, damn.

Updates here, but it's not easy reading -

It's a difficult run at the best of times. I have watched many struggle with it as I am on the chair lift that goes over the top of it. Very sad for all concerned.

That's absolutely terrible. As a parent, it obviously must make you worry about placing the care of your son or daughter in the hands of someone else.
slippy slidey snow......me likey!

Very true but rules have to be adhered to. My school are in LDA at Easter so probably less chance of avalanche but I know as a fact that they are not not insured for any off piste and our teachers would never ever take the kids down anything other than regular pistes. It's more than their job and is worth to do anything like that.

I wonder if a wrong turn was taken?

I doubt it, when they closed Diable last year it was very obvious. Great big fencing yet people still went underneath it and a man died after he lost control and hit rocks at the bottom. After that the Gendarmes were on patrol and stopped anyone who attempted to go down the closed piste.

Easy to judge but looks like was closed due to significant risk from avalanche above. Either cornice break off or wind slab significant distance from skiers (no obvious crown in pictures have seen).

Pisteurs have done a great job identifying danger i just wonder if people would have payed more attention to "piste ferme" sign if explicitly stated Avalanche risk. See piste closed and fresh pow on it easy to assume that just needed grooming.
