Hi!
For anyone going to Niederau in Austria soon, I've just came back yesterday (13th Jan) and the snow conditions are a bit grim. There is now only one nursery slope open out of about 4 or 5 and even it's like sheet ice in places. The ski school didn't hold their ski show as usual on the nursery slopes and the ski races for adults was also cancelled. Up top wasn't too bad but it rained on Sunday morning and again on Tuesday so Wednesday and Thursday the blue and red runs at the top of the mountain were very icy and hard in places. There was about a cm of snow on Thur night and it snowed for about 10 mins on Friday morning which made the conditions a bit better. Also, the chairlift is not working at present. It was really warm most of the time (+ degrees) and the temp only seemed to change when we were going home on Sat morning. They had been using the snow machines occasionally but most of the time it wasn't cold enough.

Sure hope the conditions favour better soon in Niederau, please keep a look out guys and let us know if you have just returned or hear of a good dump of snow.

Our 4 year old daughter is so very excited at the prospect of skiing on real snow.

My wife and I have always been blessed with amazing snow conditions and a 'bad' season is well overdue, please not this year though.....

we have 5 weeks until our flights are booked, so i'll be crossing my fingers until then.

Cheers for that ani_white. Never fear, i am sure snow will be there soon !

Wifey and I have boarded for over 10 years and have been lucky enough to travel most of Europe, States & Canada. If snow does not arrive, will enjoy time with kids anyhow but lets all keep praying.

Good luck to us all....

Without wishing to appear cheeky, or to abuse an often-broached topic, please can anyone offer a reliable source as to what weather conditions the area around the Kitzbühel Alps, in particular the towns of Niederau, Oberau, Thierbach and Auffach are expecting over the next few weeks ?

I am not the most resourceful chap in the world, particularly on the net, so please, anyone, let me know where I can find such information and my family and I will be eternally grateful.

If any additional info springs to mind on these towns (particularly as regards top tips for runs, which town is most appealing, must things to see and do etc), that would also be great.

Thanks in advance for your time.

In return, i will offer any advice if needed, to any reply on the above questions, on the subject of wine.

I first learnt to ski in oberau back in 1989. They had a shortage of snow that year and it was before snow cannons were around. We were bussed down to Neiderau and travelled to the top of the chairlift and learnt the basics on the red run. we were literally skiing around the grass but I must say it made you listen to the instructor and you got your turns done! Another year we had no snow and they sent us up to Auffach which is down the road and a bit higher up, the same week we went to a higher resort but I cannot recall the name. Some useful websites for forecasts are : www.accuweather.com, www.skiclub.co.uk and for some general info see : www.wildschoenau.com. Not many people seem to stay in Auffach, mostly in Oberau and Neiderau and bus down to Auffach. Oberau is very quiet and nightlife restricted to the hotels but picture postcard village. Neiderau is more of an all rounder but still a lot smaller than the norm - a wonderful family resort. I am going to Neiderau on the 3rd Feb with my husband and two children - all beginners except me. Forecasts are looking better though so fingers crosssed!

I'm off there in a few weeks, hopefully there will be snow by then. I'm staying in Niederau with my young boys. It would be nice to ski with others who are there for the half-term week.

Contact me if you want to ski whilst the kids are in ski school.

So many thanks for your messages.

How very nice to receive advice from like minded snow seekers.

All the very best to you both.
