Hi, my wife and I will be visiting Garmisch the first full weekend of March. We have never skied and would like some advice on best places to go for beginners. I'm not clear on where to go to buy lift passes, rent equipment, etc. Are hotels within walking distance to where you catch lifts? Thanks for helping out some newbies.

You can buy a lift pass and rent equipment at the Hausberg valley station, and you can get there on a free bus from the railway station.
If you have never skied before you will need to take lessons; there is a ski school based there, see http://www.skischule-gap.de/en/. You can book online; it is 80 euros per person for 2 days group lessons.
This is in their FAQ: What languages do your Ski Instructors speak?
Generally the group courses are in German. Nearly all instructors speak English and can teach bilingually.

The Hausberg part of the Garmisch Classic area, at the top of the Hausberg gondola, is suitable for beginners, using the Kreuzwankl chair lift, the practice chairlift and the magic carpet.
